Revolt of the Zombies (1936)

On the Franco-Austrian Frontier during WW I, an oriental priest, chaplain of a French colonial regiment, is condemned to life imprisonment because he possesses the power of turning men into zombies. As the priest,in his prison cell, is preparing to burn the parchment containing the location of the secret formula, Colonel Mazovia kills the priest and takes the partially-burned parchment. Fade to after the war to an expedition of representatives from all the Allied countries (only those with colonial interests it appears) being sent to Cambodia to find and destroy forever the Secret of the Zombies. The group includes Colonel Mazovia (somewhat akin to sending the fox to guard the hen house); a student of dead languages, Armand Louque; Englishman Clifford Grayson; and General Duval and his daughter Claire. A global war begins in 1940. This war drags out over many decades until most of the people still alive (mostly those born after the war started) do not even know who started it or why. Nothing is being manufactured at all any more and society has broken down into primitive localized communities. In 1966 a great plague wipes out most of what people are left but small numbers still survive. One day a strange aircraft lands at one of these communities and its pilot tells of an organization which is rebuilding civilization and slowly moving across the world re-civilizing these groups of survivors. Great reconstruction takes place over the next few decades and society is once again great and strong. The world's population is now living in underground cities. In the year 2035, on the eve of man's first flight to the moon, a popular uprising against progress (which some people claim has caused the wars of the past) gains support and becomes violent. Songwriter Danny (Pryor) believes that the only way to jump-start fading movie star Polly's (Bradley) career is to end his partnership with lyricist Mike (Newell). For Tex Ritter's first starring film Producer Edward Finney and director J.P.McCarthy chose to do a remake of a 1930's "Oklahoma Cyclone" which McCarthy had directed and Wellyn Totman wrote. McCarthy brought Totman's original along, Robert Tansey adapted it and he and McCarthy shared story and screenplay credit, and Finney added ex-outlaw Al Jennings name to it for whatever value it may have added. ("Very little" Finney wrote in a 1976 letter.) The story differs little (since "Oklahoma Cyclone" also had several songs, including the mincing "He a Lavender Cowboy" which died a quick deserved death in the first version) in that a young U.S.Deputy Marshal (Tex Ritter) hunting for his missing father, poses as a wanted outlaw and is chased by a posse into the rancho hacienda of Don Estaban Valle (Martin Garralaga) where he takes refuge in the bedroom of Lolita Valle (Joan Woodbury), the Don's daughter. Hirliman's Condor Productions (with all four starring Conrad Nagel and Hirliman's wife, actress Eleanor Hunt, in continuing roles), "Yellow Cargo" has G-Man (nee FBI) Alan O'Connor (Conrad Nagel) being "borrowed" by the United States Immigration Service to track down a smuggling ring on the West Coast, which is engaged in bringing in Orientals to the U.S. in violation of the Chinese Exclusion Act. O'Connor is met at the airport by reporter Bobbie Reynolds (Eleanor Hunt), who mistakes him for a New York actor in search of a movie job in Hollywood. O'Connor falls in with her plan to introduce him to some producers, so he can get a line on the leaders of the smuggling ring, who are operating under the guise of an independent motion picture company. Jewelers"), is accosted on the street by a stranger who asks her for a date, but her fiancé, police officer Terry Mulvaney chases him away. Spike, the stranger, is interested in Molly other than for her pretty face; he is a member of a gang of jewel thieves who are planning to rob Abrams and want to use her to obtain information regarding the merchant's shipments of jewels. Through another ruse, gang member Flash Ackroyd gets the information and, through careful planning, frames Terry for the robbery. One of Abrams' assistants is killed and Terry is charged with robbery and murder. Terry escapes but Molly is fired as Abrams thinks she was in on the robbery.
