Rage at Dawn (1955)

Terrorizing 1866 Indiana, the Reno brothers gang uses the town of Seymour as a safe haven, paying off three crooked town officials. Sent in to clean up the gang is Peterson Detective Agency operative James Barlow, who poses as an outlaw to gain the confidence of the officials and the thick-headed brothers. Complicating matters are Barlow's feelings for the Reno sister, Laura, who reluctantly keeps house for the boys out of family loyalty. Cookin' with Gags (1955)

The boys are taking Olive on a picnic. It's April 1, and Bluto plays a series of "jokes" on Popeye, though of course they go beyond the bounds of acceptability, particularly once they get to the picnic grounds; Bluto puts gasoline on the fire he asks Popeye to light and swaps a beehive for the lemonade. Bluto then launches a cruel joke against Olive and frames Popeye. The capper: he replaces Popeye's spinach with a joke can, and runs off with Olive for some canoeing. The White Orchid (1954)

An archaeologist working in Southern Mexico believes that there are remnants of the ancient Toltec civilization in a remote area. He requests a photographer, and is frustrated when he is sent a young woman to do the job. He continually annoys her with his narrow-minded remarks, yet she takes the pictures he requests of a local fiesta, and later she convinces a plantation owner from the area to be their guide. As they begin the trip in search of the archaeologist's goal, he begins to respect the young photographer. The Snow Creature (1954)

Botanist Frank Parrish leads an expedition to the Himalayas to seek out new flora, accompanied by hardboiled news photographer Peter Wells. When their lead guide, Subra, learns his wife has been kidnapped by a Yeti, Parrish disbelieves him, so the sherpas commandeer the expedition at gunpoint and turn it into a search-and-rescue party. To Parrish's surprise, they discover a whole family of Yetis in a cave, and are able to subdue the male and carry it back to civilization, to ship to the USA for study. Subra is forgiven his acts because he was right after all. Wells, meanwhile, phones in the story and Parrish finds his discovery - shipped upright in a meat cooler to maintain its natural environment - detained in the US because Wells' story refers to it as a snowMAN, and a decision must be made whether this is a customs or immigration matter. He throws away his gun, hitting the bull, who attacks. The gopher rushes to the spinach patch, eats a plant, and hurls the bull into a ravine. He teams up with Popeye to plant more spinach. Popeye is trying to get his nephews to eat their spinach, so he tells them about how Hercules (Popeye) defeated a bully (Bluto). Hercules gets his strength by sniffing garlic; he wins numerous tests of strength against the bully until the bully spots him sniffing garlic. The bully pulls out a handy bottle of chlorophyll and douses the garlic, disabling Hercules. He then knocks him into a field of spinach where Hercules discovers a new and better source of strength. Jesse James' Women (1954)

Jesse James leaves Missouri for Mississippi, and immediately charms all the women in Mississippi out of their bloomers and garters. His first conquest is the banker's daughter who helps him loot the bank in exchange for a promise of marriage; he wanders over to the saloon and runs the crooked partner of the proprietress out of town, takes all of his-and-her money and leaves her, between kisses, hounding him for her share; the third one, the saloon singer, actually makes a mark out of him as she cons him into a boxing match against a professional fighter and he loses the fight and his money, but he holds the singer and the fighter up as they leave town and gets his money back; and then he romances and swindles Cattle Kate, a replay of what he had done somewhere before to Kate and the "gotcha-again" Kate even ends up behind bars. But no film that contains a cat-fight between Peggie Castle and Lita Baron can be called a complete waste of time. Written by Les Adams
